Tasmanian Fishing Report 14/12/22

Jonah Yick on one of his best Pedra tuna trips to date: “We first landed an approx. 90 to 100kg fish (172cm fork length). In the early afternoon we put out three lures and within minutes we had a triple strike on big bluefin. Luckily one pulled the hooks, which left @wes_v_d_h and I to battle the remaining two. The aim was to release both of these fish, but unfortunately one was bitten by a seal in the final stages of the fight. The last fish came up healthy and was released boatside. The released fish was approx. 80kg, while the other was substantially bigger and in the range of 120-130kg (192cm fork length). Standout lures were the Black Magic Flaming Squid Flea XT and the Burple Liquid Lunch skirt.”

Freshwater

Craigbourne Dam
Inland Fisheries have just stoked the dam with Atlantic salmon for anglers looking for a close to home option and perfect timing for Christmas.

Lake Crescent
Big fish continue to be caught with trolling bibbed minnows proving the most effect at the moment.

Bronte Lagoon
Good numbers of fish continue to be caught.  Dawn patrol on tailers is very popular at the moment with 007’s accounting for a lot of fish.  Fish continue to be active in the middle of the day, fish can be seen eating gum beetles and caddis off the surface.  Trollers and drift spinners are doing will in the middle of the lake with a few really good-sized rainbows being caught.

Arthurs Lake
Arthurs continues to be a standout with good numbers of fish being caught all over the lake.  Drift spinning small minnows through the trees is resulting in large bags of good-sized fish. Evening rises have been proving very productive for the fly fisherman.

Little Pine Lagoon
Reports from the pine have not been good. There has been little to no surface activity and a few small under-conditioned fish been caught on the wet fly.

Penstock
Dry fly action has been patchy with anglers forced to turn to stripping wet flies or slow fishing nymphs to catch fish. The fish that have been in excellent condition and the average size is very good.

Lake Burbury
Burbury has been fishing well lately if you can find some still weather.  Some of the hardest fighting rainbow trout around are being caught.  Trolling and drift spinning is the most popular option, with fly fisherman finding the early morning midge feeders an exciting challenge.

Dee Lagoon
Rumours of some good mayfly action and some nice sized browns and rainbows being caught lately.  Trolling early morning is proving to be most productive for the lure fisherman.

Salt Water

Australian Salmon
Large schools have been present in most systems over the last week. Bait in the Derwent is in abundance and the Salmon have been feeding on most days. Cremorne has been fishing well on last light and with a flowing Tides.

Tailor
Still the odd Tailor getting caught, most caught as a bi-catch while fishing for Australian Salmon.

Bream
Good numbers of smaller bream have been caught along most shores of the Derwent and Huon over the last week. Large schools in the upper reaches of both rivers have been in spawning mode, this presents an opportunity to catch large numbers of fish. Please remember catch and release is the best practice for future fish numbers.

Tuna
Pedra and the South coast have still been red hot for Bluefin, the East coast by all reports has been very slow. The Fish have ranged in size from small school fish to 100kg plus.

Snapper
A few Snapper are starting to be caught around Betsy Island and the channel area.

Striped Trumpeter
Stripies are fishing well when the weather allows boats to get out with reasonable numbers of good-sized fish being caught in all the regular haunts.  Vexed continues to be a popular option for catching the bigger fish.

Mako
Makos have shown up all down the east coast with anglers reporting good encounters on the shelf at Eaglehawk, Maria and Schouten Island.

Blue Eye Trevalla
Blue eye have been going very well lately. It is currently the best time to go out and get a feed of these tasty fish. Paternoster rigs with fresh bait are the most popular option but a few people have been trialing the heavier vexed with good results.

Crayfish
Have been potting well with anglers seemingly not struggling to find crays over the new size limit.

Remember to please send in photos to info@spotonfishinghobart.com.au of your catches so we can feature your catch.

Rock Lobster Catch Monitoring App

Recreational rock lobster fishers are being encouraged to trial the Rock Lobster Catch Monitoring App over the 2022-23 season.

The app is:

-   A simple way for fishers to record and track their fishing activity

-   A method of collecting catch and effort data

-   A tool to help managers and scientists better understand and manage the fishery

Feedback collected from the 2022-23 season trial will help make the app as easy to use and effective as possible. From November 2023 recreational rock lobster fishers will be required to record their fishing activity using the app.

Prizes are available to people who use the app to log their trip and record their catch!

Message from Hydro Tasmania - Reimagining the Tarraleah hydropower scheme

As Australia’s electricity market changes, Hydro Tasmania is looking at how we can adapt our hydropower assets to better meet future market needs and deliver benefits back to Tasmania.

The Tarraleah hydropower scheme is having its future reimagined. Tarraleah is an important part of Hydro Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation project which is about upgrading the existing hydropower system and adding new pumped hydro in the future.
