Saltwater

Tuna
Tuna have shown up big time in the last week with bluefin, albacore and striped tuna being caught at Eagle Hawk anywhere from hard inshore to the edge of the shelf. Bluefin have been ranging in size from 6kg - 110kg, Albies have been ranging from 2kg - 20kg and striped tuna have all been around a couple of Kgs.  Bluefin have also been caught in good numbers at Dart Bank, Cape Raoul, Friars, Pedra and Maria.

Mako Shark
Mako sharks continue to be caught in good numbers at Eagle Hawk Neck, Schouten Island and Maria.  Good burley is key but a lot of anglers have been coming across them simply fishing deep with electric reels and having fish come to investigate their Boat.  Sizes have ranged from 40kg – 200kg+.

Swordfish
Swordfish have shown up along the coastline with fish getting caught almost every nice weather day we get.  Meridian Sword skirts over the top of well-presented baits is proving the most effective method.  Anglers are opting to use good quality Circle hooks Like BKK Monsters or Owners to make sure they stay connected.

Snapper
Good numbers of Snapper are being caught through Storm Bay.  Running Sinker rigs and Hayabusa paternoster rigs with fresh bait are proving the most effective method with boats choosing to anchor and burley the fish to them rather than drift around looking for them.

Calamari
Good numbers of calamari are being caught on most inshore shallow weed beds at the moment.

Australian Salmon
Continue to plague the east coast with large numbers of fish being seen along the entire east coast.  Fish have been ranging in size up to a couple of Kgs

Kingfish
Kingfish continue to be caught but will slow down over the coming weeks with the dropping water temperature.

Freshwater

Bronte
Flyfishers are doing well fishing dries around the edges to cruising fish, while lure fisherman are finding the weed is making it hard to troll and get good presentations to fish.

Penstock
Continues to be boom or bust with fish rising crazily to Mayflies one day and not a fish in sight the next.  Fish size is very good but most anglers are finding the fishing very frustrating

Great Lake
Trollers are doing very well trolling deep diving bibbed minnows or running a few colours of lead line with fish seemingly hanging deep in the more temperature stable offshore weed beds. Anglers putting in the time to find fish are reporting good bags of well-conditioned fish.

Crescent
Is firing with anglers still reporting some amazing captures of big fish from this lake.

Arthurs Lake
Is fishing well for angler’s drift spinning weed beds and structure with the average size fish around a couple of pounds. Smaller bibbed minnows like Daiwa Pressos and Ecogear Mx48fs are catching very well.  Fly fisherman have been finding this water tough of late with most opting to fish deep with sinking lines resulting in some mixed results.

Pedder
A few anglers have been venturing west to fish Pedder with most reporting some incredible fishing.  Drift spinning, trolling and Fly have all been super effective.

IFS News

Works to upgrade the Lake Kay and Double Lagoon tracks in the Western Lakes is progressing well with new culverts and drainage completed and major potholes filled. Gravelling and grading has commenced on the Double Lagoon track.

Rain and snow delayed the works which will now be completed on or about 24th March. The tracks will be periodically closed until then. Please follow all signs and speed limits.

Anglers will experience improved access when the works are completed. Your patience is appreciated.

Report from the Friars from Jonah Yick: Lots of bluefin tuna on the reefs south of Friars rocks. Tuna ranged in size from 15-30kg. Tagged and released 13 SBT and kept 3. The standout lure by far was the Black Magic Tackle Liquid Lunch XT skirt in Burple colour in the short corner.
